DIY NETWORK - THAI PARTY - OCTOBER 17, 12:30PM EST

DIY Loy Krathong

Watch cable TV show host Jeanne Benedict prepare for a Thai Party which includes Thai-inspired decorations and a Thai food menu including Pad Thai and Coconut Shrimp Soup.

Especially unique in this show is the preparation of Loy Krathongs - traditional banana leaf floral arrangments decorated with flowers (and traditionally fruit carvings). For the party each guest is invited to prepare their own Loy Krathong to launch on a floating pool. This beautiful holiday is celebrated at the Full Moon in November in Thailand.

Floral pumpkin carvingPUMPKIN CARVING - YELLOW ZINNIA

Planning a Fall wedding or Autumn family gathering? This pumpkin carving is just one example for the perfect plate garnish. Our Complete Step-by-Step Vegetable & Fruit Carving Book includes a variety of leaves, animals, and flowers, ranging from easy to advanced, like this zinnia and is available for sale in our fruit carving area.

Materials:

  • One large firm fleshed pumpkin
  • Sharp pointed knife
  • Carving knife

Preparation:

  1. Peel the pumpkin and round it off to the shape of a zinnia flower.
  2. Incise the circle to form the center of the flower and carve out the flesh to give the appearance of closed petals.
  3. For the outer petals, make curved cuts tapering to a point and remove some of the flesh from around the petals so they stand out. Make the second ring in the same fashion, but positioning the petals between those of the inner ring. Continue in this way to the perimeter of the flower.
